Born Q3-1916 [Newcastle upon Tyne 10b:265] Son of Herbert and Isabella Beatrice ATKINSON (nee PHILIPSON), of Moorfield, Moor Lane, Ponteland nr Newcastle upon Tyne.

He attended Gosforth High School in Newcastle. Married in Q1-1940 in Newmarket to Stella Constance ATKINSON (nee WEST) of Avondale, Rous Road,Newmarket

Gazetted in January 1942, Flt Sgt Herbert Philipson ATKINSON to temporary Pilot Officer from 28th November 1941. This was RAF not RCAF
He took off at 00:08 on Saturday May 1st,1943 from Gransden Lodge, Cambridgeshire in Handley Page Halifax B Mk II ser no DT741 [ LQ-P] on a raid to Essen. Shot down by a night fighter (Oblt August Geiger 11/NJG1) and crashed at 03:21 at Oosterhout (Gelderland) on the north bank of the River Waal in the Netherlands., 6 km NNW of Nijmegen. Flt Lt Atkinson and F/O W A G Hardy (RCAF) were killed and are buried in Uden War Cemetery. The rest of the crew (who were captured) were:
F/O KP Nurse (RCAF); Sgt GK Collopy (RCAF); F/O RM Reilly (RCAF); Sgt GL MacCallum (RCAF); Sgt NM Wheiler (RCAF) and F/Sgt FR O'Neill (RCAF).
405 Squadron was the only RCAF Pathfinder squadron

Herbert is buried in Uden War Cemetery, Netherlands Ref: 4.E.12
